Commercial Painting: The Hudson Lofts

Residents of the recently renovated Hudson Lofts building enjoy exposed historic brick walls and wood beams along with expansive windows. And beautiful painted elements executed by H.J. Holtz & Son. A former tobacco warehouse, the Hudson is located on Richmond’s South Side, in the rapidly evolving Manchester neighborhood. Working with a design firm that conceptualized the graphics and paint scheme, Acorn Sign Graphics turned to Holtz to bring the plan to life.

Holtz speaks at Virginia Commonwealth University Family Business Forum

Only 12 percent of family businesses survive to a third generation. Only four percent make it to a fourth generation.

There are many reasons why a family business doesn’t continue, says Sam Davis III, director of the VCU Family Business Forum, an organization that seeks to support family ventures by providing educational and networking opportunities. Last year Rick Holtz of H.J. Holtz & Son spoke on being the 3rd generation owner of his family’s business.

Historic Home Renovation: Carter’s Grove

In the summer of 2014, Tim Leahy, of Kirby Perkins Construction in Newport, R.I., needed a Virginia painter. The project: a full-scale historic home restoration of Carter’s Grove, an 18th century mansion on the banks of the James River, near Williamsburg. “There were very few highly qualified painters in that area of Virginia,” Leahy says. He reviewed websites, contacted a handful of firms, and found Rick Holtz, president of H.J. Holtz & Son.

Aiming for Better than Par – Painting & Wallpapering at Independence Golf Club

H.J. Holtz & Son’s ongoing relationship with Independence Golf Club is a win-win

Residential homeowners know that day-to-day living can be hard on a house. Just imagine the effects of 50,000 visitors in a single year.

Independence Golf Club, which hosted more than 270 events in 2017, plus daily golf traffic, began working with H.J. Holtz & Son in 2015 to update the interior color scheme and continues to rely on Holtz staff for regular visits to keep the facility looking its best.

Sharpening Our Wallcovering Skills

Some professionals – accountants, lawyers, doctors – are required to attend continuing education classes yearly, to keep their practices current and top-notch.

While the same mandate doesn’t exist for wallcovering installers, H.J. Holtz & Son makes sure its lead wallcovering installers have the opportunity to sharpen their skills at the annual Wallcovering Installers Association international conference.

“Star Wars” Movies Inspire Bedroom Project

It’s a bedroom dream come true.

Janet Deskevich’s younger daughter became a “Star Wars” fan after a day-long viewing marathon, a reward for the displacement that occurred when the family’s residence was featured on 2016 Historic Garden Week house tours.

“After three days of ‘Don’t touch anything!’ chaos, we spent one day completely vegged out and did nothing but watch [the movies] from start to finish: a nonstop “Star Wars” marathon,” Deskevich says. “She thought it was the coolest thing ever.”  And a project was born.

Bolling Haxall House Makeover

Sometimes, even a classic space needs an update.

Such was the case for the historic Bolling Haxall House at the corner of East Franklin and North Third streets. Home to The Woman’s Club, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educational opportunities for women, the 1858 Italianate mansion serves as the base for the club’s monthly gatherings as well as numerous other special events, including wedding receptions, Junior Assembly Cotillion dances, and even a recent episode of the ABC series “The Bachelorette.”
