2016 SYMPHONY HOUSE

2016 SYMPHONY HOUSE

Pineapple Acre, the 2016  Designer House for the Richmond Symphony, at 3223 Hawthorne Ave in Ginter Park continues to be open to the public through October 10th.  Every other year since 1984, The Richmond Symphony Orchestra League sponsors a Designer House to raise money for the Richmond Symphony.   Local designers compete for the opportunity to donate their time, materials and expertise to refresh a room in the home. H.J. Holtz & Son was privileged enough to work with four designers this year, applying our skills to five rooms and the front door.  Let’s take a look!

The Front Door:

We did not have to work with a designer to create this beautiful door.  Using Fine Paints of Europe we created a stunning door which highlights the red brick exterior.

The Kitchen:

We worked with Sara Hillery of Sara Hillery Interior Design.  We painted the floor and added a beautiful octagonal, which in breathtaking.  There is also an octagonal inset on the ceiling above the island, which we painted with Sherwin Williams 6591 Amaryllis.  The bright color in the room highlights the chandelier which mixes traditional and modern elements. We completed the room by painting the walls and the bannister.

The Library:

Kenneth Byrd of Kenneth Byrd Design chose the gorgeous wallpaper we hung. It is a black and gold hand painted large scale abstract graphic print by West Coast designer Kelly Wearstler. The Graffito in Onyx Beige paper gives the room a modern look, blending styles and textures to create the hip office space.

The Living Room:

Traveling from Lynchburg, Moyanne Harding of Interiors by Moyanne created a classic, neutral room consisting of two shades of gray using Farrow & Ball Strong White No. 2001 in Estate Eggshell and Pavilion Gray No. 242 in Modern Emulsion on the walls and ceiling.  This produced a bright, lovely room which feels and fresh and crisp. We hung Farrow & Ball Wisteria BP 2201 wallpaper in the panels which united the colors which added interest, depth and pattern to the walls.

The Second – Floor Master Bedroom and Bath:

Melissa Mathe of Melissa Mathe Interior Design designed a bold bedroom using a combination of semi-gloss and gloss paint in Benjamin Moore’s Van Deusen Blue HC-156. The bedroom ceiling was painted in a unique brush style using Wolf Gordon – Scuffmaster Paint in a metallic gold color which gives depth and texture. We hung a Lindsay Cowles Wallpaper on the bathroom walls and then used a three step process to create a venetian plaster look to the bathroom ceiling.  The rooms blend beautifully and the unique ceilings in these rooms showcase the unparalleled skills of our craftsmen!

The Symphony Designer House is open from September 12 – October 10 and more information can be found on their website www.rsol.org.  Come by Pineapple Acre and support the Richmond Symphony and see the wonderful work we have produced while collaborating with these talented designers.

NATIONAL ATTENTION FOR BUSINESS AND PAINTING EXCELLENCE

NATIONAL ATTENTION FOR BUSINESS AND PAINTING EXCELLENCE

H.J. Holtz & Son President speaks at national convention while the company’s work is featured on the cover of House Beautiful

RICHMOND, VA (September 6, 2016) – Richmond’s leading painting company, H.J Holtz & Son, has had a banner summer. In July the company’s President, Rick Holtz, presented at the National Painting and Decorating Contractors of America (PDCA) Residential Forum held in San Diego. Because he leads a 3rd generation family-owned business that has experienced recent growth in terms of revenue, profits, and reputation, the organizers of the conference were eager to have Rick share his insights with the attendees – painting company business owners and leaders gathered from around the country.

In his-standing-room-only talk, Mr. Holtz broke the reasons for the company’s success into four key principles: 1) get the help from business experts; 2) plan ahead vs. react; 3) align staff around company-wide goals so they can contribute toward progress; 4) create structure that empowers more people to lead efforts within the company. All of this work has translated into growth in revenue and profits, as well as both employee and customer loyalty. In support of an “ownership” mentality, the company also introduced an employee profit-sharing plan.

On the heels of the recognition that Rick received from the PDCA for his business skills, he and his team were excited to learn that their painting skills would receive national attention as well. The September issue of House Beautiful features their work on the cover and throughout an internal photo spread. As they have done on many other projects, the H.J. Holtz & Son team collaborated with renowned Richmond designer Suellen Gregory, who is profiled in the issue.

H.J. Holtz & Son, Inc. is the leading painting, wallpapering and specialty finishes company in the Richmond area. For over 80 years they have been helping homeowners and business owners protect their investments while “wowing” their friends, neighbors, and clients with truly unique spaces. HIGH GLOSS FRONT DOOR PROJECT

HIGH GLOSS FRONT DOOR PROJECT

As you welcome friends and family into your home, the front door makes (or breaks) the first impression. There is nothing more striking than a high gloss door. It has a smart, elegant feel that will catch people’s eye. More and more Richmonders are choosing this distinguished look to differentiate their home and create a unique look.

At H.J.Holtz and Son we are a Master Certified Painter of Fine Paints of Europe.  We use their premier products to create this popular, prominent look.

This door is getting ready to be rejuvenated. We have removed it from the residence and brought it to our shop. We secured the opening at the house with plywood. We also removed all of the hardware.

It’s very important to remove visual evidence of old paint. We achieve this by sanding, using heat or a gel paint and varnish remover. We sand the door and fill in any large holes or dings. Then we let these spots dry and repeat the process. Our craftsmen apply one or two coats of Brushing Putty or Swedish Putty to give the surface a new skin. This fills in surface imperfections such as wood grain. Then we sand the putty down to a smooth finish and prime with an oil base undercoater. Any scars or dings that were overlooked are repaired while we sand the undercoater smooth.

Using our state of the art spray booth in our studio in Richmond, Mark Woodson, our spray specialist, applies two to three coats of Fine Paints of Europe Hollandlac Brilliant, custom tinted to Benjamin Moore 2121-10 Gray, while sanding in between. This is a very thorough, time consuming process.

When the door is completed we re-install the hardware and door at the residence. The final result is a beautiful, polished door that reflects the home owners personality and becomes a welcoming, dramatic addition to their home. 2016 RICHMOND HOMEARAMA

2016 RICHMOND HOMEARAMA

Put on by the Home Building Association of Richmond, the 2016 Richmond Homearama features 9 designer furnished new homes in the Hallsley community of Chesterfield County. Priced between $950,000 to over $1 Million, these luxury homes were built and decorated to highlight the latest in trends, decorating ideas, and innovations.

Guests pay a $10 admission to tour the homes, check out numerous exhibits and enjoy a variety of special entertainment and events on select days. Proceeds benefit the ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation in Richmond.

We had the privilege to work with builder, Rob Carter of Southern Traditions. His home, The Nantucket South, is a farmhouse style home featuring 4,800 finished square feet. Below are some images of our work, but stop by Homearama to see them in person!

This heart of pine ceiling was whitewashed to lighten the wood and then we accented the knots to create an antiqued look. This combined with the beams creates a rustic look.

We incorporated the nautical theme in this room by hand painting this mural of a compass rose on the ceiling. The use of three colors adds depth to the mural.

In the kitchen, we painted the ceiling and added rope and nail head detail to the coffers.  This cording added texture, interest and definition

Our craftsman painted this ceiling to emulate faux metal to create a one of a kind look!

The ceiling in this bedroom is Venetian plaster, which creates a beautiful, faux marble finish.

PAINTING WHILE YOU’RE ON VACATION

PAINTING WHILE YOU’RE ON VACATION

As you look around your home, you realize that it is time for your walls to be repainted. Or you would you like to add wallpaper to your powder room. Or perhaps truly transform a room by painting the cabinets instead of replacing them. Maybe you want a graphic design painted on your floor? However the last thing you want to do is move furniture, live with disruption and have painting crews coming in and out of your home. After all, life is busy enough! Don’t you sometimes wish that you could go on vacation and have everything finished when you get back? Well, you can! Let H.J. Holtz & Son take care of painting while you’re on vacation.

Here is what one client had to say about the importance of this convenience:

We lead very busy lives with multiple homes and the ability to travel frequently. Taking time out for home maintenance repairs sometimes gets in the way. H J Holtz and Son offers the option of doing any job for us while we are away whether it is painting, wallpapering or simple construction jobs. They are a family owned, operated and run company that takes pride in personal attention to all of its clients. Their attention to detail even includes taking pictures of the space and being able to return the furniture and decorative items to their correct position after they make sure the space is as clean as it was before the job began.
Mrs. Eska B.

At H.J. Holtz & Son, we offer our services to our customers and paint while you’re away. This way, you can come home from vacation to a freshly painted home without having to deal with any of the mess! Our crews will handle the project from start to finish: remove clothes and clutter from closets, uninstall window treatments, pile up books from bookshelves, move furniture and wall hangings and more. Of course, we put everything back in order when we’re done.

Also, our crews will bring in the mail and let approved trades come and perform maintenance, as long as we know ahead of time. This way, cleaning services, pest control services and gardeners have access to your home and provide their services too.

Imagine all the benefits to having your home painted while on vacation:

  • Efficient – Since you’ll be away, our crews don’t have to make your home re-livable every evening. We can leave things the way they are and continue the next day, making things faster and more efficient.
  • No Headache – Trying to manage your day-to-day life around furniture, painting crews and emptied out closets and shelves is stressful. Since you’ll be on vacation, you can skip this stress – and the mess!
  • Less Dust – Moving furniture, emptying out bookcases and taking down wall hangings creates a lot of dust. With our vacation-friendly painting service, everything will be cleaned and restored by the time you get home.
  • Less Odor – Even though most paint products are low odor, the smell can still be noticeable. By the time you get home from your getaway, the paint odor will be gone!

DECORATIVE FLOOR AS A ROOM CENTERPIECE

DECORATIVE FLOOR AS A ROOM CENTERPIECE

A decorative floor can provide one of the most powerful makeovers for a home or business. It is a visual centerpiece that can hide flaws or imperfections in the floor but also it can easily suit any design, from traditional to contemporary. Here at H.J.Holtz & Son we have been asked to create decorative floors more and more frequently.

We work closely on many projects, especially decorative floors, with one of our valued trade partners, Suellen of Suellen Gregory in Richmond, VA who shared, “a decorative floor is a wonderful addition to a room. An open floor plan would be wonderful but so would smaller rooms as they can be made to appear larger by using a large open pattern. I think small vestibules, living rooms, kitchens, mudrooms – they can all look amazing with a pattern on the floor. The pattern creates interest and diffuses wear.” When Suellen works with a client she listens to their desires then creates a design while keeping their needs and taste in mind which includes considering the scale, shade, color, and pattern for the space.

Suellen continues, “from a design standpoint it adds a layer of interest, it can make the room look larger. It is a great way to update and it really helps with children and animals as far as care is concerned – cleans up much better than carpet!”

Creating a decorative floor is a multi-step process. After a design has been created, we enlist another one of our strategic partners to sand and remove all of stain and polyurethane from the existing floor. Once the raw floor has been exposed H.J. Holtz and Son’s skilled craftsmen lay out the pattern.  We then 1) layer the stains, paint or both, then 2) tape and reverse tape, multiple times, depending on number of colors and the complexity of the design. Upon our completion of the staining process our flooring partner applies multiple clear protective coats in a satin, semi-gloss or high gloss finish.

A decorative floor is a unique and dramatic addition to any home or space. We have the expertise and craftsmanship to fulfill the vision of our customers. There are many examples of painted and stained decorative floors in our Design Studio. Contact us to schedule a time to stop by and take a look!
