Exterior painting

We always want to put our best face forward, and the same is true for our house.

It’s easy to think about interior painting, because we live inside those walls, but your home’s exterior is its face to the world. It’s important to pay attention to how that face presents. Are there areas where paint is peeling? Are there signs of rot or water damage? Has the color faded or changed over time?

Professional assessment

Our expert painters at H.J. Holtz & Son know how to navigate the challenges of assessing a home’s exterior surfaces, from siding and cornices to windows and shutters. We will note signs of underlying issues – such as water incursion – that can undermine not only paint and finishes but the fabric of the house itself. We make sure to address those issues before we ever begin to paint, to ensure the longest life possible for every job, and we have wood craftspeople who can do the work – no outsourcing necessary.

Protecting the area

We also take care with items near your home, paying attention to and protecting plantings that may be around the perimeter. Ladders and other equipment, such as scaffolding, may be needed for us to reach all areas of your home. We are mindful of placement so we don’t trample or disturb bushes or flowers. Daily covering of particularly delicate plants may be necessary, and we’ll discuss the best approach with you.

Beyond living plantings, we are mindful of other external ornamentation, such as containers or benches. We will drape or temporarily relocate movable objects during active work and will return them at the conclusion of the job.

Weather and scheduling

No one can control Mother Nature! It’s a joke, but it’s also true. As we schedule exterior projects, we are always hopeful the weather will cooperate. But sometimes a stretch of unexpected cold or rain will delay our work. We need specific weather conditions – both in moisture and temperature – to ensure the high-quality paint we use adheres to the surface and cures properly. Applying paint in substandard conditions can lead to negative outcomes, such as premature peeling or fading. We will remain in touch with you about targeted completion dates, should weather become a factor.

Exterior options

While a fresh coat of paint always improves a home’s appearance, you may be surprised how easy it is to recharge a home’s energy. Limewash – an organic coating that creates a soft, “Old World” appearance – and painted brick are two options often overlooked. Our team can help you “see” your options before any permanent change is made.

Remember to consider your windows and shutters, too. Windows are one of the first areas of the exterior to show wear. Our team will prep them expertly for a fresh coat. Shutters can be removed and painted in our state-of-the-art spray room.

Most carpentry repairs can be handled in-house by our team of wood craftspeople. And we love painting outdoor furniture and free-standing structures, such as gazebos and pergolas. These small jobs really make a difference in the overall appearance of your property.
