H.J. HOLTZ & SON, INC. THREE GENERATIONS LEGACY

Herman J. Holtz
The founder of H.J. Holtz & Son, Inc., Herman J. Holtz established the business in Richmond, VA in 1936. Originally a paperhanger by trade, Herman ran a successful small business of four men specializing in residential and commercial painting and wallpapering. Herman was the owner of H.J. Holtz & Son for 35 years. He retired to enjoy a life of family, friends, golf, and frequent returns to his business. Mr. Holtz passed away in the fall of 2003. His son and grandson keep his legacy alive today.

Richard L. Holtz, Sr.
In 1971, H.J. Holtz & Son, Inc. was passed to the next generation. As president, Dick ran a company of six men and turned his focus to building a reputation of high-quality work and superior customer service, especially in residential contracting. He raised the bar and set the standard by which H.J. Holtz & Son currently operates. Dick also began a strong network of relationships with decorators and other professionals in the Richmond area. These relationships remain intact. He was known for his dedication and generosity not only to his business and family, but to his trade organization (Painting and Decorating Contractors of America). He provided wise counsel to his son, Rick, until his death in July 2020.

Geny Holtz
Geny joined the company in 1973 as Treasurer, working alongside her husband, Dick Holtz, for more than 40 years. She was known for being kind, caring and straightforward, and was a mother figure to many staff. It was a great pleasure of hers that three of her five children – Sharon, Carol and Rick – joined the company. When she retired in 2015, she handed her duties over to one of her daughters, Sharon Holtz Carroll, who is still with the company. Geny remained a resource and presence until her death in July 2020.

Carol Holtz Hudson
Carol joined the company in 2014, initially assisting Geny in the office. Over time, Carol moved into project management, because she wanted to learn the business from the ground up. She began spending more time at project sites, working closely with Holtz team members and coordinating progress with clients. She was known for her attention to detail, her nurturing approach to problem-solving, and her cheerful dedication to getting every job done right, in the most efficient manner possible. She was with the company until her untimely death in November 2020.

Richard L. Holtz, Jr.
Having joined his father and grandfather’s business in 1994, Rick has been vital in the growth and modernization of H.J. Holtz & Son, Inc. Now President, he has been instrumental in initiating relationships with contractors not only in the Richmond area, but in Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, Williamsburg, and Tappahannock, VA to name a few. He has also added technology to the business and is making the most of modern amenities such as specialized computer software, digital photography, and paint removal equipment. Rick has maintained and built on the strong work ethic and professionalism set forth by his father and grandfather. He is respected for his determination and integrity in his business and with his family.
