PAINTING YOUR GARAGE – PROJECT EXAMPLE

PAINTING YOUR GARAGE – PROJECT EXAMPLE

An underappreciated room in your home is the garage! You spend time in it everyday whether you are just passing through or working on a project in it. It can be used for storage, but it can also be used as an extension of your home. However you want to use your garage, we can help you transform it!

Painting your garage helps keep it clean and reflects the light so it brightens the space.

Concrete floors absorb light, while a painted floor reflects it, also creating a brighter room. Painting the garage floor also protects and makes it easier to clean.

Working together we can help you bring your vision to fruition. We collaborated with the homeowner and our local Sherwin Williams color consultant, Jack Nelson, to choose the perfect colors and materials for this project.

Painting Garage – In Progress

Garage Steps and Door

Paint lower garage walls a dark color to camouflage marks.

In the images above we have painted the top of the wall a light color (Sherwin Williams Emerald Flat paint 0055 Light French Gray) which brightens the space. We painted a faux chair rail (Sherwin Williams Semi Gloss Extra White) so we could paint the bottom a darker color (Sherwin Williams Emerald Semi Gloss paint 6244 Naval) which will camouflage marks and scuffs. The ceiling is being painted with Sherwin Williams Flat 0077 Classic French Gray. The same color is being used on the garage door but in a Semi Gloss finish.

Garage Floor In Progress

Epoxy Garage Floor Complete

Epoxy paint with added flakes creates interest and increases safety.

The floor had an existing coating that was peeling so we used a scarifier and a vacuum to remove it and get the concrete ready for new epoxy. We chose an epoxy paint because of its outstanding adhesion and its ability to stand up to hot auto tires. We put on two coats of pigmented epoxy and broadcasted a decorative flake in the second coat, followed by a final clear coat of epoxy to stabilize the flakes and seal the floor. The flakes add texture to the floor so it’s less slippery and adds interest. We used Pewter Blend Deco-Flakes and the Sherwin Williams color 6243 Distance on the floor.

2016 RICHMOND HOMEARAMA

2016 RICHMOND HOMEARAMA

Put on by the Home Building Association of Richmond, the 2016 Richmond Homearama features 9 designer furnished new homes in the Hallsley community of Chesterfield County. Priced between $950,000 to over $1 Million, these luxury homes were built and decorated to highlight the latest in trends, decorating ideas, and innovations.

Guests pay a $10 admission to tour the homes, check out numerous exhibits and enjoy a variety of special entertainment and events on select days. Proceeds benefit the ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation in Richmond.

We had the privilege to work with builder, Rob Carter of Southern Traditions. His home, The Nantucket South, is a farmhouse style home featuring 4,800 finished square feet. Below are some images of our work, but stop by Homearama to see them in person!

This heart of pine ceiling was whitewashed to lighten the wood and then we accented the knots to create an antiqued look. This combined with the beams creates a rustic look.

We incorporated the nautical theme in this room by hand painting this mural of a compass rose on the ceiling. The use of three colors adds depth to the mural.

In the kitchen, we painted the ceiling and added rope and nail head detail to the coffers.  This cording added texture, interest and definition

Our craftsman painted this ceiling to emulate faux metal to create a one of a kind look!

The ceiling in this bedroom is Venetian plaster, which creates a beautiful, faux marble finish.

PAINTING WHILE YOU’RE ON VACATION

PAINTING WHILE YOU’RE ON VACATION

As you look around your home, you realize that it is time for your walls to be repainted. Or you would you like to add wallpaper to your powder room. Or perhaps truly transform a room by painting the cabinets instead of replacing them. Maybe you want a graphic design painted on your floor? However the last thing you want to do is move furniture, live with disruption and have painting crews coming in and out of your home. After all, life is busy enough! Don’t you sometimes wish that you could go on vacation and have everything finished when you get back? Well, you can! Let H.J. Holtz & Son take care of painting while you’re on vacation.

Here is what one client had to say about the importance of this convenience:

We lead very busy lives with multiple homes and the ability to travel frequently. Taking time out for home maintenance repairs sometimes gets in the way. H J Holtz and Son offers the option of doing any job for us while we are away whether it is painting, wallpapering or simple construction jobs. They are a family owned, operated and run company that takes pride in personal attention to all of its clients. Their attention to detail even includes taking pictures of the space and being able to return the furniture and decorative items to their correct position after they make sure the space is as clean as it was before the job began.

At H.J. Holtz & Son, we offer our services to our customers and paint while you’re away. This way, you can come home from vacation to a freshly painted home without having to deal with any of the mess! Our crews will handle the project from start to finish: remove clothes and clutter from closets, uninstall window treatments, pile up books from bookshelves, move furniture and wall hangings and more. Of course, we put everything back in order when we’re done.

Also, our crews will bring in the mail and let approved trades come and perform maintenance, as long as we know ahead of time. This way, cleaning services, pest control services and gardeners have access to your home and provide their services too.

Imagine all the benefits to having your home painted while on vacation:

  • Efficient – Since you’ll be away, our crews don’t have to make your home re-livable every evening. We can leave things the way they are and continue the next day, making things faster and more efficient.

HISTORIC GARDEN WEEK IN RICHMOND VIRGINIA

According to the Garden Club of Virginia’s website, “Each spring visitors are welcomed to over 250 of Virginia’s most beautiful gardens, homes and historic landmarks during ‘America’s Largest Open House.’ This 8-day statewide event provides visitors a unique opportunity to see unforgettable gardens at the peak of Virginia’s springtime color, as well as beautiful houses sparkling with over 2,000 flower arrangements created by Garden Club of Virginia members.” Garden Week Tours in Richmond are scheduled for Thursday April 28th and Friday April 29th.

One of our client’s homes, Janet Deskevich, is a beautiful stop on this tour. Aside from the gorgeous garden, her home features her Grandmother’s wallpaper, which we installed, repaired and enriched.

History

In the 1950’s, Mr. & Mrs. Moses Nunally commissioned the Gracie Wallpaper Company to design a hand painted wallpaper for their dining room in their home in Richmond, Virginia. The scenic wallpaper consisted of approximately 20 panels that were specifically designed for the Nunally’s dining room, taking into consideration the wall dimensions and placement of doors and windows.

In the summer of 2005 after Mrs. Nunally passed away, her granddaughter, Janet Deskevich, had John Nalewaya of New York remove the twenty panels of wallpaper in hopes of having them re-hung in her home. Because the paper was originally hung on canvas, the paper and canvas were removed together, numbered and packed between foam board and acid free rice paper.

The Challenge

In January of 2009 Mrs. Deskevich contacted Jeff Ragland of H. J. Holtz and Son to see if he could look at the feasibility of hanging the scenic wallpaper in her dining room. Jeff picked up the packaged scenic wallpaper and brought it back to the shop so it could be laid out and inspected.

This project involved three challenges. One: could the scenic wallpaper be hung in a different space than it was designed for and look acceptable? Two: could the fifty year old panels be repaired from damage that they suffered from wear and tear and through the process of being removed from Mrs. Nunally’s dining room? Third: we had never re-hung antique wallpaper that had been removed!

Measurements were taken of the Deskevich’s dining room, paying very close attention to wall dimensions and the locations of doors and windows.

Installation

Once Jeff realized the scenic wallpaper would work in its new home, we began the preparation of the room. The walls were primed with an alkyd oil primer/sealer. Muslin was hung vertically followed by blank stock hung in a horizontal pattern. While taking an inventory of the panels, it was found that many of them had tears, paint drips and areas where the paper had started to come off of the canvas. Other panels had holes that were cut out for sconces and electrical switches.

On February 16, 2009 the first pieces were hung.  Although this was a wallpapering job, we used the artistic talent and eye for color of our craftsmen, Jeff Ragland, Dannon Featherston and Shane Legano to paint in the pattern on areas where color had been worn off over the fifty years or where an electrical light switch was located. They used watercolors and watercolor pens to match and touch-up the existing 50 year old graphics.

This project was very unique because it took many different skills; design skills, artistic skills, knowledge of color and last but not least wallpapering skills. Thankfully, because of the talent of our craftsmen all of the challenges were met, while exceeding the customer’s expectations.
