Your indoor furniture gets a lot of quality attention. You walk past your hall accent table each day, enjoy three meals at the kitchen table and sink into the couch at night. Unfortunately, your outdoor furniture doesn’t get the same love. It’s often forgotten about or left out to fend for itself in rainy weather. Sure, you promised that you would cover up the furniture every time it rained, but this gets old fast. When it’s time to bring your furniture in for the winter season, you notice that it’s old, worn and lackluster.
Don’t be embarrassed by your outdoor furniture. Don’t give it away just yet. You can give it a facelift without spending a lot of time or money. Now is the best time to work on it since you’re bringing in the furniture for the winter season and you won’t be taking it out until next spring. This gives you plenty of time to brainstorm and be creative.
Transform with Paint
The best way to transform your outdoor patio furniture is by painting it. Just about anything can be painted, even if it wasn’t painted before. How good the end result is depends on the paint you select, so choose carefully. Paint is available for various surfaces, and some will require primer. If the surface was painted before, you will need to remove the peeling paint beforehand.
Which colors should you choose? Natural colors that fit your environment are best, but the choice is yours. You can also go bright and bold, especially with wooden beach-style chairs.
Change the Cushions, Pillows and Hardware
Another simple, cost-effective way to give your patio furniture a new look is by updating its cushions, pillows and hardware. There is a more limited selection of cushions and pillows at this time of the year, but now is also the best time to score great deals. Keep an eye out, and if you don’t find what you’re looking for, wait until the spring to make a purchase. Also update the umbrella and hardware.
Repurpose Furniture
You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars to get a new furniture set. If you’re lacking practical features with your current set, find ways that you can repurpose existing furniture. Accent tables with glass or mosaic tops can be brought outdoors. Or, look for an old bookcase or buffet table and line the shelves with wallpaper. It can be used to keep plates, cups and snacks on hand when you have guests over. Wire racks can also be used for container plants and flowers.

The winter holidays are just around the corner, so now is the perfect time to transition your home for the giving season. Whether you plan on having family come to stay with you or you’re simply inviting guests over for a holiday meal, you want them to be comfortable in your home.
You may be thinking, “My home is too small or impractical for guests to stay with me,” but we can change that. It’s all about how you see the space and what you can do with it. Whether your home is small, cramped or laden with kids’ toys, we have simple, creative tips for making your home cozy for everyone in the family.
Declutter Your Space
It’s easy for rooms and closets to get cluttered, so now is a good time to go through these areas and get rid of stuff you haven’t used all year. If guests will be staying with you, make sure you leave them closet space and a couple of drawers to put things away. Even if your guests will be leaving, a clean closet provides room for coats, shoes and purses. The goal is to create space that is meant for your guests rather than squeezing them into your space.
Add Fresh Linens, Towels, Blankets and Pillows
No one likes to dry off their hands with the same towel that everyone else is using. Place holiday-themed disposable napkins in the bathroom. Also leave out fresh towels for showering. A few throw pillows can freshen up a sunken-in couch, while light blankets set aside in a wicker basket will give guests something to cuddle up with in front of the fire.
Arrange Furniture Strategically
Since the Christmas tree will be coming out anyway, rearranging your furniture won’t be such a burden. You may want to take out a piece of furniture to open up your space. Pay attention to seating. Family will want to socialize, so couches and chairs should be positioned near each other. In addition, there should also be end/accent tables nearby so that guests can read a book or have a glass of apple cider near them.
Bring in the Outdoors
Fresh flowers in the bedroom, bathroom or dining room add a nice touch to the home without demanding much. Indoor mums, poinsettias, holly, mistletoe or a Christmas cactus are all beautiful plants for the holidays. (Be sure to research these if you have pets, as some may be hazardous to their health!)
Give the Home a Makeover
Many people think of summer as the best time to refresh their home, but late fall is a great time, too. You have an incentive to get things done, and the kids are in school during the day giving you time to go through closets, hang new pictures and shop online. Give your home a brand new look with freshly painted walls or wallpaper. Or, brighten up your dining room set with new paint. Everyone will think it’s new, and you’ll save a bundle of money!

As Garden Week in Virginia draws near, homeowners on the tour look to experts to spruce up their interiors and exteriors alike. Award-winning painting, papering and decorative finishes contractor H.J. Holtz & Son tops the list.
RICHMOND, VA, April 9, 2014 — Historic Garden week in Virginia is a time when the beauty and pageantry of Virginia architecture and gardens are viewable to the public. Many of these residences are given a makeover before they open their homes and yards to visitors. Their gardens are not only meticulously groomed and maintained, but flower arrangements adorn the insides of these stately residences, for what is known as America’s largest open house.
A state-wide event, the Garden Week attracts tourists from all over the country to see the beautiful gardens and also the collection of new and historic homes that represent the states’ magnificent architecture. The eight days of viewing provides visitors with special access to some of the finest and most picturesque gardens and homes in Virginia.

Are you ready for Spring? We are! We have been busy revamping the entrance area of our Richmond showroom and have painted and added new lighting. Check out our new fixtures from furnishings resource extraordinaire, Shades of Light. We wanted to update our desk area and the 5-Light Springfield Linen Shade Chandelier and matching Springfield Sconces in polished nickel fit the bill. The Springfield collection of lighting is available in 3 finishes (Polished Nickel, Bronze and Matte Nickel) and features a curled arm design with linen shade that makes each style a modern classic. Our Richmond showroom revamp included painting…we did not use just any painter but instead we had local favorite H.J. Holtz & Son, Inc. on board to help us transform our entrance area and live kitchen. We wanted to update our color palette and choose Chelsea Gray (Benjamin Moore HC 168) for the “live” kitchen and behind our front desk area and Coventry Gray (Benjamin Moore HC 169) for the base color of the entrance area. For the entrance area, we gave Holtz carte blanche to add a special decorative finish giving the walls a subtle pearlized look that softly reflects light. The walls look spectacular! Holtz also changed the base color of our walnut top freestanding island…it went from a mossy green to a gray with lavender metallic pigment overtones. The team at Holtz was amazing…professional, capable and experts at their craft. H.J.
